I think this is really really well written. Super super excited for what posts you have coming next! I like how each idea flows into the next, and I felt very satisfied reading each section of your post. The ideas all complement and reinforce each other, and in my mind choosing to live your words is like having an unshakable yet open minded attitude towards life.
1. I'm curious what your thoughts are on: What if someone just like denies significance. In other words, what I took your idea that I get to decide what is important, and then I said nothing matters. So I just give up and don't engage with anything
2. When you say, "And as I live and when I die, I still will never matter any more than any other thing that has ever existed. I both matter wholly and completely, but also not at all." What do you see as the difference between wholly and completely?
Thank you so much for reading and for your thoughtful questions! Here are my responses:
1. This is fair and definitely a possibility. The way I think about it for myself is that while it may be equally true that everything matters wholly and not at all, it's simply far more enjoyable to believe that it does. Why would I subject myself to futility and unhappiness? I don't claim one approach is more correct than the other, and there's not really a way to find out, but I'd say I'm a pretty optimistic person by nature so I just choose to believe and behave in ways that make me enjoy life more :)
2. Oh, this is just a bad writing habit I have where I use two synonyms to try to capture nuance and sound fancy but it's pretty inconsequential. I'm working on being more concise!
